Meet Dr. Samuel Spillman, DC

Meet Sam, our Chronic Pain Specialist. Dr. Spillman became interested in treating and managing chronic pain after developing his own chronic back pain after a judo injury he sustained while living in Japan. Despite that, he has been able to manage an enjoyable physical life: he enjoys running (obstacle courses when he can), Brazilian JiuJitsu, tennis and learning to golf. He continually expands his knowledge through seminars and continuing education courses. He has extensive certifications in Graston Technique, Active Release Technique (ART), SFMA,FMS, TPI, and PRT- Pain Reprocessing Therapy. PRT is an evidence-based treatment for chronic pain conditions- numerous articles in the NY Times and Washington Post have highlighted it recently and it is well established in the scientific literature.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chronic Pain

  • What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is pain that persists  for months — sometimes years — and often resists quick fixes. It may stem from past injuries, repetitive stress, inflammation, or nerve dysfunction. Many of our patients come in after trying everything else, still looking for answers

  • What causes chronic pain?

Chronic pain is complex and rarely has a single cause, but is instead influenced by a variety of factors including injuries, underlying health conditions, depression, anxiety, repetitive strain, poor posture, and lifestyle factors.

  • How can Balanced help with chronic pain?

We’ve helped people reduce or eliminate long-term pain from conditions like sciatica, plantar fasciitis, shoulder dysfunction, and more. Our approach combines pain reprocessing therapy with chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, and strength rehab to rebuild how your body moves — not just mask symptoms. You’ll leave with understanding, a plan. We promise that we will not treat you as though you have an acute injury- we understand that chronic pain is fundamentally different.

  • What other types of therapies does Balanced offer for chronic pain?

In addition to chiropractic care, we use therapeutic exercises, dry needling, soft tissue work, massage therapy, mobility training, and home programs. You may also receive support for post-surgical rehab or injury prevention. Every plan is built around your condition and goals — not a fixed set of services.

  • Is chiropractic care safe for chronic pain?

Yes — when it’s done right and combined with a plan for long-term stability. Our team evaluates your condition first, then designs a safe and progressive care plan that may include gentle adjustments, guided exercises, and hands-on therapy. Patients dealing with long-standing pain often tell us this is the first time they felt truly understood.

  • How long does it take to see results from chiropractic care for chronic pain?

Some patients feel relief within a few visits. Others need a few months of consistent care, especially if the pain has been around for years. What we can promise: we’ll measure progress, adapt your plan, and never push unnecessary sessions. Most importantly, we’ll help you build toward real, lasting change.

  • Can chiropractic care for chronic pain be used in conjunction with other treatments?

Yes, chiropractic care can complement other conventional and alternative therapies for chronic pain management. In fact, the evidence suggests that multi-modal care is the most effective care for chronic pain conditions. Collaborative approaches may include physical therapy, medication, talk therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, and lifestyle modifications tailored to individual needs and preferences. It's essential to consult with healthcare providers to develop a comprehensive and integrated treatment plan.

  • Can chiropractic care for chronic pain be covered by insurance?

Often, yes. We’ll help verify your benefits before you begin. Many of our patients with chronic pain are surprised by what’s covered — and we’ll always give you clear cost information up front, no surprises.

  • What if the pain comes back?

We build every plan with long-term function in mind — not just short-term relief. You’ll leave with tools: strength programs, mobility work, and strategies for managing flare-ups. Many patients come back for quick tune-ups if needed, but most stay pain-free with the right habits in place.  It is common for chronic pain to return, however, it often responds more quickly to treatment each time, and episodes get further and further apart.

  • I’ve been in pain for years — can this actually help?

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • Do you work with older adults dealing with chronic pain?

All the time. Chronic pain often shows up with age. Dr. Spillman enjoys working with patients 50 and up.  Our care plans are designed to meet you where you are, with safe and effective therapy that works for your lifestyle. We’ve helped people in their 70s and 80s get back to walking, traveling, and living pain-free.

  • Can you help even if I’ve had surgery?

Yes. We regularly work with patients post-surgery — whether it’s a joint replacement, spinal procedure, or soft tissue repair. Our team builds plans that support healing, restore mobility, and rebuild strength, often in coordination with your surgeon’s guidelines. Patients tell us their recovery went faster here than anywhere else they’ve been.
